Frequently Asked Questions
Mercury Spill Kit
Can I use regular absorbent pads to clean up mercury?
No. Standard absorbent pads and socks will not capture liquid mercury droplets. Mercury requires specialized sorbent powder that chemically binds with mercury to form a stable amalgam for safe collection and disposal. This kit includes the proper mercury-specific sorbent.
How do I know the mercury cleanup is complete?
Use the mercury indicator included in the kit. After cleaning the visible mercury, apply the indicator to the affected area. If mercury residue remains, the indicator will react and show contamination. Continue cleanup until the indicator shows no remaining mercury.
Can I vacuum a mercury spill?
Never use a standard vacuum on a mercury spill. Standard vacuums will disperse mercury into tiny droplets and spread mercury vapor throughout the area, making contamination worse. Use only the mercury sorbent powder and collection tools included in this kit.
How do I dispose of mercury waste?
Mercury waste is classified as hazardous waste under EPA RCRA regulations. Place all mercury-contaminated materials in the disposal bags provided, seal, and label as mercury waste. Contact your local hazardous waste disposal service for proper pickup and disposal.
What facilities need a mercury spill kit?
Any facility that uses or stores mercury-containing devices: laboratories, dental offices, hospitals, schools, HVAC shops (manometers), and facilities with fluorescent lamp recycling. Even a single broken mercury thermometer requires proper cleanup materials.
